Proving Des Moines is NOT boring

Why eat at a chain Wednesday: Bagni Di Lucca

I am truly amazed at the amount of good quality local restaurants in our great city. For today’s post, I honestly had three places I could write about, so I had to do a little deductive reasoning. For starters, I wanted to go back to the meal and my memories from the quality of the food.

So, with out further ado, today’s Why eat a chain Wednesday is featuring the new pizza joint in the East Village called Bagni Di Lucca. You might recognize the Lucca name, Bagni is a spin off of the long standing Lucca restaurant also over in the East Village, actually just around the corner.

Well, Bagni has pizza, but I decided to go with the Calzone for some reason, but I wasn’t disappointed. I ordered the Ham & Spinach Calzone and – oh my – it was fantastic. It was huge, which I realize is hard to decipher from the picture because there is nothing next to it. My initial thought when I saw the Calzone was I was not going to be able to finish it. Yet, when I dug in I was just immersed in the warm ham, spinach, cheese, and amazing bread cooked to perfection. I honestly shouldn’t have finished it but it was so good I seriously couldn’t stop eating. I can attest the Pizza is equally as appealing as my lunch guest had the Pinneaple pizza and he said it was amazing.

Bagni’s restaurant is very similar to how Proof is set up, as both restaurants are spin off’s from Lucca. There is the raised counter where you order your meal from the large chalk board at the back of the room. Payment is made there and the meal is brought to your table after it is prepared. The tables are mainly little quaint two seaters with various flowered aspects in the middle, which honestly we had to move to the side to have a conversation.

Bagni Di Lucca is a restaurant worthy of your trip form the west side. So, make the plans to head there as soon as you can. Bagni Di Lucca is on E 5th street just around the corner from many of the East Villages best restaurants. After all, why would you want to eat at a chain restaurant when you can immerse yourself into Bagni Di Lucca’s pizza?

  1. When I first looked at my take-out pizza from Bagni di Lucca, I thought ‘Really? This is IT?’…Then I took a bite. Finished the pizza and wondered how much time it would take to go back for a second, even though I wasn’t hungry any longer.

    Long story short, AWESOME.
