Proving Des Moines is NOT boring

Support a piece of Des Moines history at the Gatsby Gala

If you’re a fan of the 1920′s, Templeton Rye Whiskey and dressing as a flapper-inspired beauty, Foxtrot your way to the Gatsby Gala at the Salisbury House & Gardens at 4025 Tonawanda Drive in Des Moines on September 16th.  The annual fundraiser for the Salisbury House & Gardens Foundation draws on the rich history of the historic landmark in Des Moines.  The 42-room “American castle” was built between 1923 and 1928 and continues to host a variety of social events each year.  Salisbury House was built by entrepreneur and pioneer in the women’s cosmetic industry, Carl Weeks.  Weeks and his family lived in the home until 1958 when it was purchased by the Iowa State Education Association.  The Salisbury House & Gardens Foundation then purchased it in 1998.  Restoration of the house began in 2005 and continues today.

Writer Amanda Gorsche Miller makes her 4-year-old debut as a flower girl at the Salisbury House & Gardens.

Set up like an underground, prohibition-era speakeasy, the Gatsby Gala requires a password for entry.  Hint: it’s “Gatsby.”  If you play along with the theme, the fictitious Greenwood Temperance League is looking to shut down the party, so keep it quiet.  The now famous Templeton Rye Whiskey will be prominently featured along with a selection of delicious treats like Brandy beef sliders and drunken goat cheese on rye bread.  Creme Cupcake will provide prohibition-era inspired desserts.  The festivities will be followed by an unofficial after-party at the Americana at 1312 Locust Street in Des Moines.

The cost for the gala is $75 for adults under 35 and $150 for those older than 35.  Remember-it’s a fundraiser for a beautiful piece of Des Moines history.  It’s also a place that serves as a part of many Des Moines family’s histories due to it’s hosting of social events.  My Aunt Debbie Stout was married in the Salisbury Gardens in the late 70′s.  I served as a tiny flower girl who refused to walk down the aisle, even after being bribed with a quarter.  What can I say?  I was holding out for 50 cents.

RSVP for the Gala here and have a great time getting your Gatsby on!  Follow the Salisbury House & Gardens on Twitter and Facebook for updates on the event.
