You don’t have to be an avid cyclist to get excited about what I consider to be one of the best national events to come to our fine city in a long time. The Urban Assault Ride will “assault” the streets of Des Moines on Sunday, August 28, 2011, starting at Mullet’s, 1300 SE 1st in Des Moines. You may recall me writing about my husband and my first experience with the Urban Assault Ride in 2010.
The Urban Assault Ride started in Austin, Texas, in June 2003, combining bike race, adventure race, obstacle course and party into an afternoon of fun. The event, sponsored by Colorado-based New Belgium Brewing, grew over the years, spreading across the nation until it landed in Des Moines in August of 2010. The first Urban Assault Ride in Des Moines was the biggest inaugural ride in the history of the race, which proves Des Moines is a bike-loving and obstacle course conquering town. The event organizers also reported that more beer was consumed during the Des Moines after-party than at any other event, which proves Des Moines is a beer-loving town too.
