One of the best shows I saw during the 80/35 weekend did not come on one of the 3 stages downtown. That’s to take nothing away from Death Cab for Cutie, Avett Brothers, or any of the other top bands that played the festival. It’s only to give recognition to one of the best club shows we’ve had downtown, put on by the Poison Control Center (PCC) two Saturdays ago at the Vaudeville Mews.
I’ve seen multiple shows by PCC and they are one of the best bands to place someone in front of who knows almost nothing about Iowa-produced music. They can quickly win over a crowd, like they did that night after 2 days of 40+ bands, and noone wanted to leave. This wasn’t a selfish show either as they brought on stage their fellow Ames musicians, including Christopher the Conquered (CTC) and Nate from Mumford’s.
They also did their whole set with Derek Lambert on bass, who Patrick Fleming (singer/guitar, PCC) said was Derek’s 5th show that day?? Apparently Derek opened Saturday of 80/35 with his band Derek Lambert & the Prairie Fires at noon, went on to play with CTC on the main stage, took over drums for Leslie & the Lys (another great show that weekend), and fit in some playing elsewhere that day.
To get the full story, you’ll probably have to ask someone tonight. It turns out all the mentioned above (minus Lesly), will be taking over Woolys in the East Village for a 10pm show!
Friday at Wooley’s will be a night to remember! Maximum Ames Records Presents.. Christopher the Conquered, Mumfords, Derek Lambert and the Prarie Fires, and the Poison Control Center…
This looks like one of those classic Filmore East line ups from the late 60’s.. Oh by the way this show is FREEEEEEEEEEEE!
July 20th, 10pm sharp! Also, thanks to Basement Design for the killer posters! – via www.thePoisonControlCenter.com
