Candles. White clothed tables. Food and wine. Descending on a Des Moines landmark a la flash mob. Yep, it’s time for FlashDineDSM III.
What started off as a very local take on Diner en Blanc—the now famous international outdoor picnic—FlashDineDSM appears to be the only event of its kind in the Midwest, outside of an official Diner en Blanc in Chicago. Diner en Blanc turns 25 years old this year by the way, and there is a documentary to be released soon that gives you a sense of how it all started.
Here in Des Moines, Sunday, September 1st will mark the third annual FlashDineDSM event. 6:00pm sharp, to be exact.
It’s pretty much Bring Your Own everything, including table and chairs. Participants will set up community style, although each table will likely have its own unique style. And you may want to go all out on this one. There’s a $100 gift card to Django at stake in a “Best Decorated Table” contest.
Tom wrote about FlashDine II for DSMINB last year, in case you thought you were having déjà vu. Last year’s location was the Sculpture Garden downtown. This year organizers have picked a new location, only to be revealed the day of, as is tradition. A few things I can tell you about this year’s location: it is beautiful but there isn’t any grass or lawn for lounging on (you will want a table and chairs) and being a mother of a two-year-old, I’d say it’s not toddler-friendly. This time we’ll be getting a babysitter.
To stay in touch with the event, and to find out the location to be revealed, you may want to RSVP to the Facebook event page or follow on Twitter (@flashdinedsm). The Facebook page includes a checklist, and a few folks have been hashing out what they might wear (hmmm, white jean cutoffs? Used wedding dress hack?).
Oh, and if you’re a musician interested in performing at the event for tips, send a message to email@example.com. Adding a little night music could make it all that more magical. I’m thinking of bringing a few sparklers myself.
