The atmosphere: Stadium energy, farm motif. The only thing missing is the dense smell of hay. For the big games throughout the year and virtually any Sunday during football season, this place packs out. It’s loud, galvanized, and a quick scan around the room reveals a sea of craned necks aimed upwards at the multitude of flat screens. When you come to Chicken Coop, you stay at Chicken Coop—for hours. Maybe it’s the marathon of games that provide iron clad excuses to stay cemented to your high top, but a lot of cred goes to the famous chicken wings themselves. Hence, the name. Or just maybe, it’s because it feels like home to the rural Iowan. The sports haven was built with this demographic in mind—most of the interior is constructed out of a deconstructed barn. In short, a guys guy kind of place.
The libation: Any domestic brewsky you prefer. The Chicken Coop is unapologetically American in its taste. Simple offerings abound—bud, miller, coors, high life, sam adams. It’s affordable and casual. You get all the perks of being at your buddy’s house, but the food is better and someone comes to check on you every once in a while. It’s a beautiful thing. The liquor basics are here too, but beer calls the shots at this barn house.
The specials: Every week night from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. is a gift for patrons. Monday you can indulge in $5 domestic pitchers, which brings a decent following of groups weekly. Tuesday is $5 koozie night. Buy the koozie, bring it with you on your follow up visits to the Coop and get a $1 can of Bud, Bud Light, Miller Light or Coors Light.* It’s also 45 cent wing night—bonus! Wednesdays demand respect for the $2 bottle deal and Thursdays will transform anyone into a cap’n with the $2 Captain cocktails. Sunday blues have you down? That’s okay, there’s a 2-for-1 drafts, bottles and tallboy domestics special that’ll make you forget the dreaded work week.
