Proving Des Moines is NOT boring

Buy Fresh, Buy Local, Party, and Devour!

Tomorrow kicks off the newest event that has caught plenty of attention in its last two months of promotion.  Whether the idea has made people inspired, humored, or potentially grossed out, I’m guessing Devour Des Moines will lay the groundwork for another unique aspect within our summer schedule.  The combination of 4-member teams competing in a Triathlon-style competition while downing bacon-wrapped tator tots and other local foods has already gained momentum for future success.

Sample schedule from Devourdesmoines.com:

1st Leg: Team Member 1 eats an order of bacon wrapped tater tots and runs two miles
2nd Leg: Team Member 2 eats 2 slices of crab Rangoon pizza and bikes 5 miles
3rd Leg: Team member 3 eats a P and jogs to the aquatic venue where they will paddle across the pool.
4th Leg: Team member 4 shucks and eats an ear of corn and runs two miles
5th Leg: The whole team is back together to devour a plate of Bavarian Nachos and run a final lap

Teams will also raise money through donations so they can win the “All-You-Can-Eat” Fundraiser award.  Devour Des Moines has 22 teams made up of 88 ”athletes” that are set to go tomorrow   The event will take place Saturday, August 6th throughout the downtown Des Moines area starting at 10am.

After Party Details: Once the race is complete, anyone is welcome to join up from 12:30-3:30pm at High Life/El Bait Shop for the awards ceremony, drink specials, and live music.  Knowing this crew of people, I would consider 3:30 as a loose end time.  Proceeds from beer sales will also go to supporting the race’s Buy Fresh, Buy Local initiative.

*All proceeds of Devour Des Moines will go to the Greater Des Moines Buy Fresh, Buy Local campaign, which is dedicated to connecting the Greater Des Moines community to local farm-fresh food as a means to supporting a healthier population and promoting economic growth. The campaign is a network of local farms, food businesses and consumers who are committed to increasing the production and sale of fresh, local foods here in central Iowa.. more details here.
