Social Media Capital of the World!!!
Social Media capital of the World…in Des Moines, Iowa!?
Is that a bold statement? Is that complete insanity and laughable?
Truly, I don’t know how to answer those questions. I would wager a bet most people not in Des Moines would laugh at that statement, and let’s face it that laughter would also be accompanied with visions of tractors, farms, pigs, and people in over-alls. But, think about it a little further, take a step back and consider the fact that Iowans are very prideful people…we love the sense of community that comes from living in a city like Des Moines, where we know others share our feelings.
With that in mind, is it too far to grasp the concept of Des Moines being a Social Media Mecca?
Maybe just a little, considering we don’t have numbers on our side. The facts don’t lie, there are many cities in the world much more densely populated than Des Moines. Those cities have more skyscrapers, an effective taxi system, and many other ‘items’ that are generally considered better than what we have here in Des Moines. But, do they have the sense of community like we have here in Des Moines?
Let’s face it, they don’t.
Case and point: Fuelingnewbusiness conducted a poll to find out which of 45 marketing firms in the nation have the best Blog. I know I touched on this before, but the article in the Des Moines Register today brought this topic back up and I am revisiting. Lessing-Flynn, affectionately known as @admavericks on many Social Media platforms, won the contest with an astounding 45% of the votes. They leaned on our sense of pride for Iowa as one of their main points in their strategy, going as far as to say “This is about Iowa.” This Blog, and our extension into other Social Media platforms, was one of the many ring-leaders who jumped on board to fight the fight against the major competitor in the contest, which just happened to be from North Carolina. Des Moines’ strong Social Media presence and our sense of community were the reasons why Lessing-Flynn won that contest, which they say themselves in the Register piece. Bringing this concept full-circle…is Lessing-Flynn’s statement about the logistics of the Social Media capital really that far of a stretch?

Thanks for the shout out and for recognizing the truth. Love your take on “community” – you nailed it.
