Des Moines: Making waves
I am pretty fond of Des Moines, which is very obvious. I have dedicated a few posts a week to this Blog to let everyone know that Des Moines Is Not Boring, which was previously debatable. My efforts started a little over a year ago at a time when Des Moines was just turning the preverbal corner, if you will. It was a time when investments into downtown and the Events Center were starting to get people talking about Des Moines. Our nightlife had just taken a big swing towards recovery with new bars and restaurants popping up all around town. Then, the recession hit and everything seemed to slow do…w…n…, until recently.
Big news of late has been the addition of the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, which I featured in a number of posts previously. The Sculpture is a key ingredient to the spark in Des Moines chatter of late. Three weeks ago Des Moines was featured in the Minneapolis/St Paul Tribune, I know I have posted that article a few many times and truly beaten a dead horse, but it is relevant yet again. That articles relevance transcends to a post in the NY Times two weeks ago, which focused on the Pappjohn Sculpture Park as a “Cure for Urban Blight.” Then, just this week, another feature about Des Moines popped up in a less prominent location, on a radio show that is also syndicated on their website. The State of the Re:Union spent some time in Des Moines, only their approach differed slightly from their print brethren. The Re:Union gang called Des Moines the “Heart of the Heartland” and focused on an Iraqi refugees life in Des Moines, a new Social Club, a Pig farm, and local musicians coming home.
Regardless of the type of media, news about Des Moines is making it out of fly-over-country at record pace. Social Media has played a huge factor in spearheading our pride for our city and is pushing our conversations on all over the world. Just the other day a local company utilized the cities strong Social Media influence to rally against a company from the east coast. This effort is just one example of the immense pride felt for our city and for those who share our passion. Our unity is making waves that are felt all across the nation, and those waves are just getting bigger by the day.

Similar thoughts – we wrote about the “State of the Re:Union” and NYT mentions of Des Moines, last week, too.
