Cindy Crawford, Jessica Stam, Karlie Kloss. All of these women were discovered in obscure places and went on to become the world’s top supermodels. While Iowa is not historically known for high fashion, top models can come out of anywhere, and can go on to travel the world modeling for designers like Valentino Garavani, Miuccia Prada, and Oscar de la Renta. While being a model can allow one to create beautiful photographs and wear luxurious clothing, being a model, however, is more than just being a pretty face.
While most models can’t make modeling a full-time job, supermodels like Gisele Bündchen ($45 million/year) are paid top dollar to represent many brands. Most models will say their intent isn’t for the money, but rather, to create and contribute to the art and fashion world in a meaningful way.
Many models are spokespersons for worthy organizations. The aforementioned Bündchen is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme. Christy Turlington, coined “the greatest model of all time,” founded the advocacy campaign Every Mother Counts to increase the education and support for maternal mortality reduction globally as well as serving on the Harvard School Global Health Council.
While there is never a guarantee a certain model will grace the pages of Vogue or shoot a fragrance campaign, there are many opportunities both in Des Moines and internationally for a model to gain valuable career experience to add to their résumé, make some money to pay for college, walk the runway for a major fashion designer, and make some lifelong friends along the way.
This Saturday’s open casting call with LVN Models is an opportunity for aspiring models to step into the modeling and fashion industry.
